Pontiac Repair: 1999 Grand Am Window Regulator, phillips head, glass place

Question
Hello. I've been driving with a broken regulator for a few
years now...(I know it's broken, because I had put my
window down, and it wouldn't come back up. When My father
and I tried getting the window back up with pliers, the
window shattered [a stupid decision in retrospect]and when
I took it to a glass place they said that the regulator was
broken so they'd have to rig the window to stay up until I
got it fixed.) I've dredded having to pay to fix the
problem because I'm sure it's pricey, but I'm tired of
opening my door to pay a toll and for drive thru. And now
that my A/C has kicked out (Not sure if I need to recharge
it or there are other problems) I'd really like to roll
down my drivers side window for the impending summer. How
difficult would it be to install a window regulator on my
own? I'm pretty handy and have done several mechanical
things before. I've ordered a regulator online and it's
coming in the mail, I was just wondering if you could let
me know how to replace it. That would be awesome. Thank
you.

Answer
Hey Ryan:

This is a pretty easy job, You need to remove the inside door trim. there are 3 screws that attach it to the door. one behinf the reflector on the back edge of the door, one in the grab handle and one under the window switches. also remove the bezel that goes in behind the inside door handle the screws are all phillips head. then pull the door trim off. peel back the water defector and the regulator is right there. ther are 5 screws that attach the regulator and motor to the door. also ther are 2 bolts that attache the regulator to the glass remove those as well. the last piece to the puzzle is a metal plate that is bridged across the upper and lower portions of the inside door trim it has 3 or 4 nuts that attach it remove those. then pull the regulator out of the door BUT NOT BEFORE you use some tape to hold the glass up in the door. with the door open use some duct tape and run it from the outside part of the glass over the top of the door and into the galss on the inside. That will hold the glass uop in the door. Now depending on the regulator you bought it may or maynot have the motor on it. If not there are just 3 bolts that attach the motor to the regulator just sawp the old motor onto the new regulator and reverse the proceedure and your done. Easy enough. Good luck :)
