Pontiac Repair: Computer indicates bad EGR but light still comes on after new EGR, fuel level sensor, egr valve

Question
I have a 2001 Bonneville that has the service engine light on. My mechanic checked it and it apparently indicated a problem with the EGR valve, which he then replaced and reset the computer, however the light came back on with the same indication. He thinks there may be a problem with the computer? but wants me to take it to a car electric ship. At the same time now my gas gauge has started going haywire also, sometimes the needle shows completely full others completely empty, but it's not showing the actual amount of gas. I took the car to Autozone and they scanned it and said it looked like the EGR valve, so I'm sort of stuck. Could these issues be related and if I need a new computer how hard/expensive might that be? Thanks

Answer
Hi Jack:
Well it depends on what the code is for. If it has a code for pintel position of the valve there is a software update on some of those cars depend on whic year it is. ther is a glitch in the software and the pintel position show being open even know it's in the closed position. This may be your issue? you could also have a wiring issue between the valve and the computer causing the lamp to come on. with out the use of a scan tool it's impossable to tell exactly what's wrong with this. but what I mentioned was a pretty popular issue in that car. Good luck :)

Sorry I missed the second part of your question I was in a hurry this AM. The gas gauge is more that likley caused my a fuel level sensor in the tank has gone bad. VERY VERY common problem with this car. Make sure you get a factory replacemnt part and not aftermarket while at the dealer pick up a bottle of fuel system protectnat/cleaner and use it a couple of times a year it will protect the level sensor.
