Pontiac Repair: Pontiac Grand Prix - Park Lock wont engage, pontiac grand prix, grand prix 3

Question
Hi!
You stated that you don't have much transmission experience- but you might still be able to help me:
I've got a 1992 Pontiac Grand prix 3,1 LE. In Park, it will still roll and you hear a faint clicking sound from the tranny, as if the Park Lock would "try" to engage. At first I thougt the Shifter cable wasn't properly adjusted, so I did that - no change. Even when the lever on top of the transmission is pushed all the way back manually, it won't lock. Any idea? Do I have to throw out my transmission? Or can it be fixed at reasonable cost? I'm grateful for any tips -

Answer
Hi Mark:

well if the transmission will not "hold" in park something inside the transmission is bent or broken. It's a pretty simple system but in order to fix it the transmission has to come apart. it's just a rod and lever that ingages the final drive assembly. either the rod is bent or the linkage came apart in the transmission. It' not anything you will be able to fix with it in the car I fear. Good luck :)
