Pontiac Repair: steering shaft grease kit, grand prix gtp, clock spring

Question
2004 Grand Prix GTP 3.8 s/c - There is a little bit of play in the steering wheel and a slight knocking noise when turning.  I was told to either replace the steering shaft or purchase the grease kit.  Can you give me the steps telling me how to install the grease kit since I have never attempted this before.  Thanks

Answer
Hi Michael:

if you are going to keep this car do not greas it because it's just a band aid it will make noise again! Replace it there is a redesigned shaft to resolve the issue. In order to remove it turn the steering wheel so the wheels are straight. remove the left front wheel after jacking up the car and using a jack stand. there is a boot between the car and the steering rack lift that up and remove the pinch bolt that holds the shaft to the steering gear. then inside the car there is a boot also pull it down towards the fire wall and remobe the bolt that holds the other side of the shaft to the steering colum. then pull the shaft out of the fire wall into the car. reverse the proceedusre to install it. MAKE SURE THAT IF YOU ROTATE THE STEERING WHEEL AT ALL THAT IT GOD BACK TO THE STARAIGHT AHEAD POSITION BEFORE YOU PUT ANYTHING BACK TOGETHER! You will mess up the clock spring in the steering column for the air bag is you put it back together without having the wheel straight!
Good luck :}
