Pontiac Repair: 97 Grand Prix, crank pulley, crankshaft

Question
I wrote to you last Friday about my car dying and shredding a belt that got wrapped around the crank pulley. I found out tonight that the crank pulley has moved away from the motor about 2 grooves of the belt and that is why my belts are shredding. So would this cause the hesitation and tapping sound or will the problem be more serious?
Thank you.

Answer
Hi Kenneth:

It's impossible for the pulley to move away from the engine. The hub part of it is bolted to the crankshaft. It is possible for the rubber on the balancer to wear out and the pulley be loose on the pulley hub It can cause a your noise and possibly a hesitation and or stalling because those windows on the back of the pulley are moving away from the sensor. good luck :}
