Pontiac Repair: engine rebuild problem, roller bearings, replacement co

Question
I OWN A 92 FIREBIRD WITH A L92 MOTOR, I WAS TOLD BY A LOCAL MECHANIC THAT I SPUN A BEARING. THE MOTOR ONLY ON OCASSION WOULD MAKE A TAPPING NOISE. I TOOK THE CAR TO A NATIONAL CHAIN ENGINE REPLACEMENT CO. AND EXPLAINED THAT I WANTED TO USE MY BLOCK FOR # MATCHING REASONS. I COULD DRIVE THE CAR WITHOUT ANY PROBLEMS OR NOISE! THE COMPANY JUST CALLED ME AND INFORMED ME THAT I NOW HAVE 1000.00 IN XTRAS DUE TO A BAD CORE, CRANKSHAFT, ROLLER BEARINGS AND A BAD STARTER! COULD ALL OF THESE GO WRONG AND YET THE MOTOR RUN SO WELL?
I STATED TO THEM THAT I WANTED MY OLD BLOCK AND THEY INFORMED ME THAT IT WAS ALREADY GONE?

Answer
Hey Greg:

Bummer, Sounds like a bait and switch to me. Seems thye didn't listen to you about wanting to use the original block. Most of those chains DO not rebuild the engines in house they just have a reman one sent in from their warehouse. The guys there are just remoave and replace guys. That seems high on all the xtras. if you agreeded apon a pprice for the whole job before hand it shouldn't cost any more. Every once in a while there are un for seen extras like exhaust studs or bolts but the rest should be staringht forward. My guess is they broke you old starter while taking it out thye should eat that. Now as for your original block If thye sent it out already your screwed unless you rellay bitch and state your case you wanted the original engine block back. If that's the case and you are not in a bind for the car wait for your engine to get repaired and demand it back! I hope you wrote down the #'s of the old one so it's not a bait and switch again. Hope that sheds some light on it. Good luck :}
