Pontiac Repair: 99 Grand Am 4 cylinder, fuel level sensor, fuel delivery system

Question
Just filled my car with gas and my low gas light came on. I shut off my car, restarted it and it came on again. I know I have gas in there but it indicates I don't. Now my check engine light came on. Do you think it could be a sensor needing replacement, or something in the fuel delivery system? Thank you.

Answer
Hi Lynn:

The feul level sensor in the tanks has gone bad It's a pretty common issue with these cars. High sulfer content in the gas eats away at the sensor in the tank. When that sensor goes bad it will usually not turn on the check engine light. It will set a code in the computers memory. The light on may be a differnt issue altothegr. I belive on that year car there was a service bulletine about replacing the sensor here is the part # 25317986 KIT, FUEL LEVEL SENSOR. My guess is that the # has changed again but this is the # that was in the service bulletin. good luck :}
