Pontiac Repair: 95 Pontiac Grand Am - Headlights Not Working, switch jumper, high beams

Question
Hi Todd, My wifes 95 Grand Am's headlights stoppped working. They've been flickering for months. All other lights work and the flash for pass still works. The headlights just don't come on in either low or high beam. Any thoughts I could try?

Answer
Hey Roger:

If the flash to pass lamps work the high bean circuit is working on the car and the bubls are okay. the only thing the low and high beams have in common is the headlamp switch. You could have a bad connection at the head lamp switch or a bad switch. the high beams and flash to pass use the same wires but a different set of contacts in the headlamp switch. I do not have access to wire digrams that go back any further then '98 on the internet so I can't look to see what else they have in common. I'd hate to have you buy a switch and it be something else. you can do this look at the color of the wires at the head lamps they are usually tan and light green for the high and lo beam bulbs. at the switch jumper battery voltage into the low and high beam wires if the lamps come on you know the switch is the culprit just a easy fix/try. good luck :}
