Pontiac Repair: gas gauge, fuel level sensor, fuel system treatment

Question
I have a 2002 Pontiac Grand Prix SE, with 3.1 L V-6.  Lately the gas gauge has become unreliable.  Even if the tank is almost empty, the gauge will slowly move up towards full. Basically it floats all all over the place.  Do you have any suggestions.  My guess is that its a sensor of some type in the gas tank, but I am interested in your answer.

Answer
Hey Brian:

Your right on the mark. The fuel level sensor on the fuel pump module has gone bad. what happens is there are 2 metal wiper feed that run on a variable ressitor and metals and sulfer in the gas make the feet arch on the card and wear out. the level sensor is replaceable and around $100.00 for the part. Get a part from the dealer do not get an aftermarket one. Also while you are there gte a bottle of fuel system treatment. There are 2 of them but you want the one that says fuel level treatment or something along those lines. it is a complete system cleaner and it has a protectant for the level sensor. I would use it 2X a year as maintence and it does work!! The best part about the job is there is one is the fule pump module can be removed from inside the trunk the tanks does not have to be removed so it's a labor saver. Good louck :}
