Pontiac Repair: key stuck in the on position/will not come out of park/won, spilled liquids, fuse box

Question
Dear car expert,

I had to change the heater core on my 98 Pontiac Grand Am 2.4l
I disconnected the neg.battery post, removed the fuses for the air bags, removed the components cover (radio, heater, etc...and removed the console. While doing all of this, I had left the key in the on position in the ignition. I called it a day and tried to remove the key, so as to lock the car and the key would not come out. The next day, I removed the heater core and installed a new one.
I then reinstalled the covers to the components radio, heater, etc. I then reinstalled the console, reconnected the battery and returned the air bag fuses to the panel. I tried the door locks;they worked, I tried the headlights and dome light and they worked. I then turned the key forward but the car would not start.  I didn't even hear a noise (just nothing). The gear shift will not come out of park.
I would appreciate your opinion and any advice you can give me on this problem.

Thanks,
Dave

Answer
Hi
I would double check all the electrical connections under the console. The shifter assy. includes the BTSI/shift lock(Brake Transmission shift interlock) solonoid. This is the solonoid that realeases both the key and allows shifting of the shifter.
Check the PRNDL fuse inside fuse box, and the ERLS fuse in the underhood box (next to battery).
Make sure the connector for the shifter is tight, and CLEAN (no spilled liquids, etc...)
IF all that checks out the only fix I know of is to replace the shifter assy.
I would, as long as it all worked beforehand, check ALL that VERY close.
I hope this helps
