Pontiac Repair: 1997 grand am, excessive corrosion, battery cables

Question
I have a 97 grand am with a 2.4 liter. I replaced the alternator, tension pulley, and belt. Went to start the car and it sounded like a dead battery(2-3 slow cranks) bought a new battery and tried to fire it up only to get the same results. Any ideas?

Answer
HI Robert:

It can be a bunch of things what was the root failure here the alternator quit charging and the belt tensioner was seized and the belt freyed??? Did the no start happen after all of this or has it been going on pre alternator??? You could have a starter motor that has an excessive draw causing a slow crank. You could have an issue with a loos connection on either of the battery cables eirther at the battery or on the engine block or starter. Excessive corrosion on or in one of the battery cables. If the cables look crappy they porobaly are inside where the condustor is. What happnes if you trt to jump the new battery with another car will it crank? Just a few things to look at. Good luck and happy holidays :}
