Pontiac Repair: Car wont crank, starter solenoid, liter engine

Question
QUESTION: hey. I have a 1988 firebird 2 door 5.0 liter engine and one day the starter died i put a new one in and when you turn the key it wouldent do anything so i just shorted it to start so i got another starter and now it wont short when you try you just get a clunk sound and you still cant start it from the ignition?

ANSWER: Hey Tyler:
I'm not sure but if this car has the black pellet in the igntion key then you may have a security problem with the car not allowing the car to start. I'm not sure when that started with that car it was right around the year or 89. If the key doesn't have that black pellet in it then you have top do the basic's have someone crank the car for you while you check for power to the starter solenoid on the purple small wire. if you do not have power ther you have to trace it back wards to find where you are loosing the "crank" signal. either the clutch switch if this is a manual transmission or the park neutral switch if it's an automatic or the ignition switch it's self. Make sure you do not have any blown fuseable links those feed the ignition switch. good luck :)

QUESTION: well i checked i have power and if i try to short it to the battery i just get one big clunk then taht is it and it looks like it spoted weldd my battery and it does have a security alarm how can i turn it off if that is the case?

Answer
If it has the factiry anti-theft system That is the first thing to look at usually the wires on the ignition lock cylinder frey and break. That is something that has to be fixed my a professianl you need special tools and the air bag is in the steering column so you don't want to mess with that. Good luck :)
