Pontiac Repair: P0440 Code, fuel filler pipe, emission control system

Question
My check engine light came on again..2 weeks after I repaced the gas cap with a brand new one. EVAP emission control system malfunction was the reading.....again.  What would be a logical next step for me now? Thanks for your help.

Answer
Hey Keith:

A p0440 doesn't always mean a gas cap loose code. It is a gross "big" leak detected. What type of car is this? basically what a 440 code is the computer is telling the evap system to purge the vapors out of the charcole canister and the sensor in the tank doesn't see this happening. So what's up??? it could be a bad sensor in the tank possible.. It could be a bad evap vent solenoid Very possible it could be a witing problem to the vent solenoid possible if it's a sunfire. It could be a bad evap purge solenoid not likely but possible. It could be a badly rotted out fuel filler pipe if you live in the rust belt like I do. These are just a few of the things it could be. good luck :)
