Pontiac Repair: 1999 Pontiac Grand Prix GT, wiggle test, pontiac grand prix

Question
"I recently purchased for my daughter a 1999 Pontiac Grand Prix GT with the 3.8 liter engine.

She started having trouble removing the key from the ignition after a couple of weeks. Finally got to the point of not coming out at all.

Within a few days the dash display went totally out along with the fan for the AC/Heater etc. Then car started stalling without warning, just would die. It might restart right back up or it might take half an hour before firing.

Finally it died and had it towed to my local mechanic. After looking it over he said there was a wire running to the shifter that was frayed and causing all of my problems.

Took car home, ran great for 1 day and then display went out and finally about an hour later died and would not start. Had it towed back to my mechanic. He says he cannot figure out what it might be. He went out and started it with no trouble and left it running for awhile, shut it off and restarted it several times without any problem. He even had one of his guys take it out and drive it several miles with no problems.

Any ideas what it could be. I'm starting to suspect the computer. Would this be something to look at.

Thanks

Answer
Hi
The frayed wires I can understand for the key problem.
FIRST, I'm sure he's checked all this, but power and grounds. Power cable to starter and underhood electrical center. Grounds mounted on the transmission stud.
Is the PCM setting any codes? If so, what are they?
I would REALLY then look at the underhood fuse block. (Located on the passenger side under the hood, mounted on shock tower next to battery). It CAN cause VERY similar problems. They can tap test and wiggle test circuits going to it.

He could check power and grounds to the PCM. I would damn the PCM LASTLY and when ALL else has failed. They are not THAT common to cause problems. Also it (the PCM) would have NOTHING to do with the HVAC control display or the Blower motor.
I really hope this helps.
Follow post back, if needed.
Good Luck
