Pontiac Repair: alternator wire?, powertrain control module, auto electricians

Question
I've got a 97 grand am SE with a 3.1.  I've put 2 alternators in it today.  the first one said no out put and had it tested and it was bad.  the second one says no out put but when I had it tested off the vehicle it said it was good but on the vehicle it says no output from alternator.  Autozone says it could be the alternator wire but doesn't know where that is (go figure).  any ideas? help please

Answer
Hi
The orange wire on the back of alternator (S Tetrminal) should be hot.
If not hot check the HVAC BLO MOT 30a fuse underhood fuse block.
If it is hot, make sure the big red wire is also hot.
If it is not hot check the fusible link (gray) on starter.
If all this checks out OK, You MAY be getting an alternator wired for NO PCM control. If the PCM cnnot control the Alternator, it will not charge (on these vehicles).
If you are getting the correct alternators, I would hunt down a GOOD electrical diagnostic repair shop (Alternator/starter shops usually have good auto electricians) and have them check it.
It is a small possibility the PCM Powertrain Control Module aka.. computer)could be faulty. I have experienced this a few times.
I hope this helps.
Good Luck
