Pontiac Repair: cruis control switch replacement, sterring wheel, sir system

Question
I have a 2001 Pontiac Grand Am 4cyl. The cruise control switch on the sterring wheel is broken. The button contacts to the module are broken. I need to replace this module. How do I remove the original? I tried prying with a screw driver, but I am afraid of breaking it off.

Answer
Hi
The switch screws in under the Air Bag Inflator module to the steering wheel itself.
If you are mechanically inclined I would tell you to do it yourself normally.
If you have dealt with Air Bags, it should be of no problem.
If you have not and are not too sure, please take it to a professional and have them replace this switch. The air bag can blow with NO warning and with VERY GREAT force.
Even with battery unplugged and fuse out, they still have reserve power to blow. So please, I am not judging your ability, but if you are unsure, take it somewhere and pay a little instead of the air bag blowing and possibally getting hurt or at least having to replace the inflator module.
I will send along the replacement procedure
Disable the SIR system. Refer to Disabling the SIR System in SIR.
Remove the inflatable restraint steering wheel module. Refer to Inflatable Restraint Steering Wheel Module Replacement in SIR.
Remove the screws from the steering wheel control switch.
Remove the steering wheel control switch from the steering wheel.
Disconnect the electrical connector from the steering wheel control switch.
I hope this helps
