Pontiac Repair: Trunk will not close, pontiac sunfire, 2003 pontiac sunfire

Question
I have a 2003 pontiac sunfire with low miles. i have noticed that once in awhile the trunk will open by itself. I dont have key less entry. i have a button under the dash that will open the trunk if I press it. I pressed it today to get some tools out of the trunk and now it will not close. When I press the button under the dash, I hear what sounds like a switch, or click of some sort. Any help appreciated.

Answer
Hi
The opening by itself could be a few things I see looking at the schematic.
The switch COULD have an internal contact problem.
The BCM (Body Control Module)could be faulty.
The wiring could have a short to ground.
This could be diagnosed as the BCM CAN set fault codes that should be able to be retrieved by a scan tool.
(It is possible that whatever the culprit, it has now
caused a hard fault, that has the trunk actuator stuck.)
You can also check the trunk latch and see if has just "closed" on it's own, also. If the latch looks closed up and does not look like it could accept the striker, you could manually open it with a screwdriver.
I Hope this helps you.
Good Luck
