Pontiac Repair: Tried lots of things, nothing works, fuel pressure regulator, catalytic convertor

Question
1992 Pontiac Grand Am 2.3l Quad 4 Problem started with loss of speed while driving on highway. With pedal to the floor, hard to keep speed up. Took to garage the said the catalytic convertor was clogged. Fix this but still having problem. Did tune up air filter, plugs, oil change also.(seemed to smell fuel in the oil). There are no fault codes reading inside the car. When trying to drive there is a strong smell of gas, but no leaks. Help I am totally lost.

Answer
Hi
See if the Fuel Pressure Regulator is leaking.
It'll leak fuel into the intake system through the vacuum line that is attached to it.
If you unplug vacuum line and there is ANY fuel present, it is leaking.
This would also explain Cat. Convertor being "clogged". System running too rich (to much fuel) will "clog" converters. Mechanics MUST remember, Converters dont just PLUG up for NO REASON....THERE HAS TO BE A REASON.
Regulator is located on the fuel rail, on one end or the other (I cannot remember) with a small vacuum line attached and it is USUALLY round, metal and abit smaller than a babyfood jar.... maybe about half the size of one.
If it IS NOT leaking, you'll need to find your fuel leak, (Leaking injector, Excessive fuel pressure, not enough air will be rich...etc..)Tell mechanic to Monitor the Fuel Trim and see if it is running rich.
Just advice from experience.
Hope this helps
Good Luck
