Pontiac Repair: 1995 pontiac sunfire engine troubles, pontiac sunfire, loud pop

I have a 1995 Pontiac Sunfire with a 2.2L.  When the car is first started, it sometimes stalls shifting into reverse and drive.  It also dies, hesitates, and makes a loud pop sound from the engine when accelerating from any speed.

I would consider a major tune up first, including Spark Plugs, plug wires, fuel and air filters and have the coil towers checked for rust and or proper operation.
Is the Service engine soon light on?
Sounds like it MAY be backfiring, so that MAY be an ignition problem.
I would also see if the timing chain has jumped a tooth which IS possible on your vehicle.
