Pontiac Repair: air conditioner compressor noise, pontiac bonneville, air conditioner compressor

Question
1997 pontiac bonneville 3.8 eng. a/c compressor has whine that increases with engine rpms.added a/c oil and freon that seemed to reduce noise some.also the air does not seem to be as cool as identical three other bonnevilles i have.

Answer
Hi
If noise goes away when A/C is off, it is probabally the compressor going bad.
If the noise is there whether or not the A/C is on, you may want to check all other belt driven accessories, before condemming the compressor.
If it is the compressor, it is just as inexpensive to replace compressor assembly, as opposed to having it rebuilt. Not many shop offer compressors rebuilt anymore for just that reason.
I hope this helps.
Just advise from experience
