Pontiac Repair: starter does one click and then nothing, neutral safety switch, jumper cables

Question
i have a 97 grand prix with a 3.8. the car fired one time and since then all i can get is a click from the starter. the battery has been replace, the starter has been removed and tested good. i am getting 13. volts from the battery and 13. volts at the starter. is it possible that the neutral safety switch is the problem. the car is an automatic. thanks for any advice you can give.

Answer
Sorry for the wait, i get an overwelming amount of questions.

Anything is possible.
But it sounds like a wire or something.
If it was the neutral switch it would not even give the one click.

Get an assistant to sit in the car and either hold the key forward, like you were starting the car, while you inspect the wires, wiggle things, pull on the wires, push on the wires. Make sure you check the battery terminals.

It really sounds like you have a bad ground.
Check your engine ground.
Take a set of jumper cables, attach one end to the engine, or better yet clip it somewhere on the starter and attach the other end to the NEGATIVE (BLACK) battery terminal.

And if none of that works, im being dead serious.
Take a hammer or a tire iron, long bar, baseball bat, whatever and give the starter/solenoid a good whack, and see if it works.

Thanks.
