Pontiac Repair: Pulling Steering wheel, turn signal switch, chiltons manual

Question
I have to replace the turn signal switch on a 1992 Pontiac Grand Prix LE 3.1. How do I remove the steering wheel to do this? Are special tools needed? I am handy but is this something a trained mechanic should do? What else do I need to know in this reagrd? Thank you.

Answer
If your car has an airbag then deffinately bring it to a shop for replacement. Properly disarming the airbag is tricky and can be deadly if it isn't done right. If there is no airbag then you will need a steering wheel puller in order to remove the wheel. Once the wheel is off there is a lock plate to remove which might require a special small torx bit and then I believe the ignition cylinder has to come out to access the turn signal switch. A Hayes or Chiltons manual should have all the necessary steps and tools outlined in it. Hope this helps your decision and good luck :)
