Pontiac Repair: 97 grand prix ign. key problem, brake switch, solenoid

Question
Lately when I turn the car off, the key will not rotate back enough to remove it. There used to be a click when i would put it in park and turn it off, then it would come out but more times lately it hasn't been doing that. It is a 97 grand prix se 3.8

Answer
Charlie

It may be a failed BTSI solenoid,{Brake Transmission Shift Interlock}there is a solenoid located at the right side of the steering column this usually fails, also at the shifter if its a floor mounted shift, there is a switch located on the shifter that activates the solenoid when in park so the key can be rotated out, also the brake switch is integrated with the operation of the BTSI,make sure you have voltage at the solenoid, try tapping on it and see if it releases,if voltage is good then the solenoid in the column needs to be replaced.
