Pontiac Repair: Timing, spark plug wires, pontiac sunbird

Question -
Someone had cut my alt. belt along with my spark plug wires and other things on my 1991 Pontiac sunbird LE. Now that I have my spark plug wires and alt. belt on the thing will not start. Everytime I try to start it all it does is back fire out the throttle body! Is it the timing or did I just completly ruin the engine. Please help me!

Hi, what it sound like, tha it is cross wired, Do the engine have a distributor or coil pack? If it's the distributor  the blackened terminal shown on the cap is the number 1 this is the one you start with.
cylinders 1-2-3-4
fire order 1-3-4-2 this is how they will connect on the distributor cap. or coil pack.
