Pontiac Repair: leaking manifold, pontiac transport, repair estimate

Question
I have been told by a mechanic that my manifold gasket needs replaced. There has been no evidence of leaking on the ground under my vehicle and the mechanic told me it is probably burning off on the engine block. I was shown some evidence on the top of the engine of possible leaking of oil and coolant. I haven't had any problems with my vehicle. Should I try to get another opinion or is this something that happens often? I have a 1997 pontiac transport montana with 80,000 miles and the repair estimate was $750.00

Answer
I always encourage a second (and even third) opinion but this is a very common problem with the engine in your van. GM has even introduced revised gaskets and repair procedure to correct this. You may be able to put off the repair until you are more comfortable with the financial end but the price sounds reasonable to me, and labor/parts rates do rise over time
