Pontiac Repair: Pontiac Grand Prix Cooling Fans Not Working, pontiac grand prix, reputable repair shop

Question
I have recently got the engine in my 1993 Grand Prix replaced with the same make/model engine. I now have a problem with it overheating and leaking somewhat.
I took it back to the guy who fixed it and and he checked the relay. He then found out that it was the computer module that was bad.
He wants $150.00 to repair it, which stinks because it worked fine before he replaced the engine. The warranty is no longer valid, so I'll just have to eat it.
My question is this: Is it possible to by-pass the control and wire it straight to the ignition?
I've heard of it being done but I wasn't sure if the computer would hamper this idea.
Thanks,
Ian

Answer
First thing to do is find a reputable repair shop. http://www.aseblueseal.org/businesses/index.asp sometimes it is worth the extra money to use GM dealership services http://www.gmgoodwrench.com but as to your problem what size motor do you have? And what is it leaking? If the problem is that the fans are not running it could be due to a few things such as temp sending unit, relay, fan motor, or associated wiring. Yes it is possible to bypass the pcm the easiest way is just ground the signal circuits from the relays this will make both fans run whenever the ignition in the run position. This way your heater performance will suffer, but putting a switch in you could turn the fans on or off. Personally though I would much rather see it diagnosed and fixed properly.
