Pontiac Repair: 1993 Pontiac Grand Am transmission?, pontiac grand am, grandam

Question
Hi Harold,
I have a 93 GrandAm (89k miles), which stalls whenever I stop the car. When I step on the gas, the car first stutters, then moves very slowly. Sometimes, it just move slowly as the engine rpm goes high. Car has problem moving uphill, even when I change to lower gear.

I took it to a mechanic, who told me to retire the car and buy a new one, because it will cause ~$2k to replace the transmission and it is not worth it.

I took the car back last night. Check the transmission fluid, which seems to be low. I filled up the fluid. The car runs noticably better, but still stall as before.

Can you give me some suggestions as to what to do next and what is the problem? Your help is very much appreciated.

Regards,
Stan

Answer
It sounds to me like you have 2 different problems. The stalling problem and a transmission that is slipping. The stalling problem is probably not related to the trans problem and it could be several things causing it. The trans problem sounds like it needs to come out and rebuilt.
Why dont you take it to the dealer and have them look at it. They will know better than anyone how to correctly diagnose your problem.
