Porsche Repair: 968 timing belt replacement cost, timing belt replacement cost, timing belt replacement

Question
Hi Charles,
I had a 944 for 8 years - a great experience,  I had timing belt /  water pump
etc. replaced as preventive maintenance. I am in the process of buying a 968.
Car has less has 30K - timing belt replaced in 2002,  Can I get a visible
inspection done or go ahead and get it replaced and should the water pump
be done as well as in the job with my 944?  What is an approximate cost I
should expect?  This is he original owner and his work was completed at the
dealership where I guess I should get it completed.  Also is the pinion
bearing something to address  as well?

Thanks - Derek.

Answer
Derek,

Sorry, I personally have never R&R'd a w pump on the 968.
If I wanted to know what it costs I would simply ask either a Dealer or good aftermarket P shop to quote it for me.  But you said this vehicle had it done only a few years ago and the mileage since then is low.  I would not say it is a "worry issue" yet.  Sound sensible?

I have however helped a friend sell their 968 and I recall removing a hose or plug in the cover over the belt to inspect the belt for signs of age (cracking) and wear; also another sign of wear is the amount of or visibility the printing remaining on the belt.

On the pinion bearing I have heard various stories, some say that only 5-10% had problems, some say if it does not appear within the first 25k miles you probably won't have a problem, on and on.  As I recall one of the signs of a problem pinion will be the "whining" noise you'll hear.

If you are tracking the 968 or doing any type of driving events I'm sure you can figure out the "must inspect" items yourself based on your past 944, or simply find a old (they are retiring) 944/951.. guru and let him do a more thorough inspection for you.  It might be worth the note.
