Porsche Repair: 944 quirks, wheel bearing grease, 944s2

Question
Hello, two questions for you to try for my 1983 944...First off,The washer in the shifter below the knob vibrates and rattles loudly unless I put pressure on either side of the shifter while driving? Any suggestions? Also My heater fan doesn't blow. I've checked the fuse, but I don't know what it could be. The air conditioning fan on the seperate switch blows just fine. The previous owner did some shady modifications and the heater fan has never worked for me. Any light on this subject would be great. Thanks!

Answer
Hi Steve,

This will be short and sweet to get us started:

Re:  Heater blower...

Can you locate and describe to me any 'shady modifications' or anything that doesn't look "factory" at these four locations:

1.  Fresh air (for heater) switch
2.  Fresh air blower
3.  Fresh air blower relay
4.  The "Additional" fuse board...fuse #9, 25 amps

Re: Shifter Rattler

I know exactly the sound you are describing...my daughter's '91 944S2 did the same thing...and it would have driven me crazy.  But she never asked me to look at it, so I haven't given it much thought.  But now that you ask...

First, are you aware of the adjustment from under the car to ensure the shift lever itself is 'adjusted'...meaning absolutely vertical when in neutral?  This isn't a test, I just don't have a lot of time to explain it tonight.

In any event, here's my proposal:  After the shift lever is "properly adjusted", shine a flashlight from below and then from above to identify potential spots where two pieces of metal could come into contact on the open highway...especially if one were "tension-free".  Basically, jiggle things around to see if you can duplicate the rattle on a small scale.

If so AND if not, either way... don't, tell anyone, but get a handful of wheel bearing grease and stick it in through the top, another handful up from the bottom and squish it all together.  The glob will definitely not hurt anything but the next german trained mechanic who sees it will swear at you while he smiles at you, and it'll probably quiet down your rattler.  Sorry, crude is not my normal approach, but if my daughter's car were still around, I do it tomorrow!

Dave

PS...let me know if that works...thanks.
