Porsche Repair: 87 911 fan belt adjustment, tension increases, fan belt

Question
Thank you for taking time to help.  I have an '87 911 cabrio, stock 3.2, and the fan belt is loose, do you know how to adjust the tension of the fan belt.  Looking at it briefly, it appears fairly simple to adjust the A/C belt, but I don't see the adjustment bolts for the fan belt.  Thank you in advance.

Answer
Hi Dan.

Those Germans can hide things in plain sight so well!  I'm going to assume the design on the '87's is the venerable old design dating back to the '50's...and if so, then the pulley on which the belt rides is actually in two pieces.  When the two pieces are separated shims can be placed or removed between the two pulley halves to essentially widen or narrow the width of the inner pulley walls.  As the belt itself begins to ride inside the pulley higher up the pulley walls it's stretched further and tension increases.

Here's what I'd suggest.  Take a look at this article...

...and then call the Pelican people.  If you haven't dealt with them I'll bet you'll be happy with both advice and parts prices.  If they confirm the design is still the same, well there you have it...one more reason my wife should let me buy a 911.  I know how to change the fan belt!

Good luck and let me know if it works out.
