Porsche Repair: Steering, no screws, steering wheel

Question
I have a 1988 911 and the last time out I noticed the steering column moved up and down.  From what I've been able to find on the internet there is a bearing on the top and bottom of the steering shaft.  It would appear the bearing on top has warn or come loose.  My question is how does the horn cover come off the steering wheel without destroying it.

Thanks for your help,
Bob

Answer
Bob,

If only I knew the answer because I TOO owned a beautiful 911.  Alas,  no such luck.

Unfortunately, I don't have any specific reference information on the 911 steering wheel, but I do for a 944 steering wheel.  If we assume they are the same, here's what's said:

With the steering wheel turned so the wheels are straight ahead, " remove the steering wheel impact pad by pulling it off, starting at the lower outside corners to avoid damaging the electrical horn contacts."

The accompanying pictures seem to show no screws or clips holding the pad mechanically, rather, it appears the pad's rubberized  edges squeeze into spaces in the underlying metal bracket (which mimics the shape of the pad) and once in place is merely held by friction.

Before you start, check to see if this description fits your situation.  It is very common for Porsche to interchange parts like these among cars of the same model year, so it's likely the 911 and 944 are the same.   But, if what you're seeing is totally different than the description above, we'll have to go back to the drawing board.

Let me know if this helps.  Thanks.
