RV Repair: winch - coleman tent trailer, coleman tent trailer, fleetwood dealer

Question
When we brought our son's trailer home we were unable to raise the roof with the winch/gear system - the gears no longer hold the roof in place   Is this a defective part (he only used it for a year) or is it something we did - how do we fix it?  Can we fix it ourselves or do we have to take it to a coleman/fleetwood dealer?

there are two gears spot welded together on the crank sometimes they break
not sure how much warranty you have left?
