RV Repair: board above slideout rotten, foot travel trailer, baught

Question
Baught a 1998 crossroads 28 foot travel trailer. The header above the slide out is rotten. How hard is that to replace ourselves. And how would we go about it. Would the fiberglass on the outside  be glued to that header?

Answer
Missy, How long is the slide? If it is over 8 feet then you will need to find lumber longer. The best way to replace it is to take the slide out and sit it on the ground so you can get to it. Once you have it out then you should be able to remove the wood you want and replace it with new. As for the header, it should be screwed to the slide out either from the front or the rear. Most are from the front, you just need to see how they attached it. Remember that the header is all tied into the strength of the roof of the slide as well. Make sure it is fine before replacing just the header. If it is just the header you don't need to remove the slide. I hope this helps, Bill
