RV Repair: Dometic RV 2610 Refrigerator, refrigeration mechanic, ammonia smell

Question
We have just recently purchased a 1992 RV with this fridge. We turned it on to electric, left it on for a whole day and alas, it's warmer inside than out. After talking to a refrigeration mechanic, he told me to place it upside down for 24 hrs and then right side up again and it should work.I tried that for 48 hrs, turned it right side up  and now there is a very strong ammonia smell and it still doesn't work! is the cooling coil shot? and if so is it repairable?

Answer
Don, I hate to say it but turning it upside down is an old wives tale. Your cooling unit is bad and needs replaced. There is an outfit named freezeitrv@yahoo.com that in my opinion makes the best remanufactured cooling units out today. They usually run around 400.00 and he sends very descriptive details on how to replace them. He also has a 5 year warranty where most of the rest only have a 1 year. Thanks, Bill
