RV Repair: Duo-Therm RV ACs, mount duo, duo therm

Question
I have two roof mount Duo-Therm Penguin AC with a Comfort Center control. Both heat pump functions quit working at the same time along with one of the AC's. The other AC works only partly and neither unit will work on AUTO.

Answer
Mike, The one ac that is working I am guessing only works on the fan position. The other has no function at all. For them both to go at the same time is not very probable. More than likely depending on the model it is usually the main air will have the main control box located inside under the ceiling grate. It will be identified by 2 phone jack connections going into it. This sends out the signal for them to work. It may be there or it may be in the T-Stat. About the only way to check is to go on top and remove that cover and open up the Start capacitor box and check there for voltage when the T-Stat is on. If there is no voltage then Take it to a repair shop and tell them what you found. If the T-Stat is coming on in most cases it is working. It would then be the control box. If you happen to see any oil residue on anything in the air when you are on the roof then it is possible that the unit has lost the charge. Remember that when you are checking voltage at the capacitors you should always check the side of each and look for the voltage rating. This is what you want at your meter. If you have 110 there and no more then the capacitor is bad. I have what is called an ANNIE which will test everything on the air even start the compressor by itself to make sure it is good. If you want to do these tests and get back with me I can more then likely tell you what is wrong with your air conditioners. Thanks, Bill
