RV Repair: Onan fuel pump, fuel issues, question thanks

Question
QUESTION: tom, i have an onan gen set and have fuel issues in that ometimes the gen runs for a few minutes.  i think its the fuel pump. it has one wire runing to it.  my question is does the wire only have dc when the gen is running? and should it produce fule squirts as the gen is turning over with the line disconnected?

ANSWER: Hi Steven, I am not the best Gen Tech. But I can tell you if you hot wire the pump it should run. I don't know if it suppose to squirt fuel while the gen is turning over. (thou, I think it would). This is what I DO know. The symptoms you are experiencing, sounds to me like your fuel line is dry rotted and is sucking in air. This is a common problem. I'm sorry I am not more help, but I would replace the fuel line. Its cheep and easy and then you can eliminate that as the problem. Good Luck

QUESTION: Thanks Tom.  I did try a temp line to a galon of gas and that does not seem to help.  The gen runs while I spray starting fluid into the carb but will not stay running,  the temp line is clear and it seems to fill up with fuel when gen turning over?  I don't know if the carb is the problem maybe?  All this problem seemed to have started when I ran the gas tank below 1/4.  Could there be some sensor that is preventing the thing from running?

Answer
Hi Steven, This is Shawn, not Tom. He May be better then me at the gen repairs. The fuel pump will make a clacking noise when its not getting fuel. On some models, the fuel filter is the first fitting on the carburetor. Replace that. (if you have it in that location) If That dose not do the trick, Replace the carb. Good Luck
