RV Repair: Wiring a tent trailer battery, fuse block, rv battery

Question
I own a 1987 Starcraft tent trailor. Unfortunately when I bought it used I did not notice that there was no battery power, only AC power. Can I wire in a RV battery so as to have both AC/DC?  There is a converter unit in the trailor. If so, I would greatly appreciate some explicit instructions on how to go about doing this myself.  Many thanks, Bill!

Answer
Hi Barry:
You can certainly wire in a battery all it takes is some time. I kind of wonder why it would have a converter and no battery? Most wiring is done while the trailer is being built so that some of it can be hidden and look good. Chances are there is not going to be an easy way hide the wires. Explicit instructions are going to be hard to give. DC wiring is relatively easy. Probably you will want to put in a 5 or 8 space fuse block so you can run 5 or 8 seperate circuits. Run a large, #8 red wire to the fuse block, from the battery, wherever you put it, most often it is central to the trailer so the individual runs will be shorter. A #8 black or white wire for a common negative will also be needed. Next run #12 wires for the individual circuits, lights, radio, fans whatever from the fuses to the device and back to the common negative. Attach the wires to the wall using staples or wire straps. Test each circuit as soon as you are done while things about that circuit are fresh in your mind. Just take your time and do it right and it will come out fine. Good luck.
