Saab Repair: 94 Saab 900S Timing chain, 1994 saab 900s, matt fitzgerald

Question
I need some info on the likelyhood and side-effects (e.g., damage caused by a breaking chain) of timing chain failure in a 1994 Saab 900S with 70000 miles on it. My girlfriend had the exhaust and belts done on her car, and the Saab repair place said she should have the timing chain done as well. The estimate of the repair is $1800. (The mechanic said the repair kit alone costs $900.) This doesn't sound like a do-it-yourself type of job, eh?
Thank you,
Matt Fitzgerald

Answer
I would strongly suggest that you not do the timing chain yourself, I have done mine and it is a bitch of a job. However, at only 70,000 miles your chain should not need replacing yet. If it is noisy, perhaps your tensioner is at fault. I would not even look at the chain until 100,000 miles. I changed mine at 225,000 kilometers (140,000 miles) because it was noisy. They a durable chain. However, if it breaks there is serious engine damage.....ultimately it's your call.
