Saab Repair: water on drivers side by gas pedal, first class car, side fender

Question
Jim,I have a 1996 900s 5 door.after heavy rain I get water under the carpet on drivers side only.I removed the front wiper arms and cowl, and the seconder lower plastic tray. the cabin filter was soaked.the lower windshield rubber is not water tight to the glass.I was thinking that water got in and runs under the plastic.,but there is another plastic cover underneath.!,but it has those angular extensions that go over the windshield under the first cover.if the lower windshield rubber is leaking,I think water is running into those extensions right under the lower plastic tray..if the cabin filter gets soaked, can water run inside the fan assembly into the driver side? I cant figure out why both sides are not wet.the drain tray under the cowl has a trough to the passenger side fender but not the driver side, because of the wiper assembly. Also have you seen water get in around the blower assembly gasket?i am thinking to tar the entire metal tray, and make a plastic drain for the passenger side.,on the lower cowl plastic ,out the drivers fender as well..the center drain tube is clear now(it had sludge and pine needles ) and I do not like where it drains on the bushings near the firewall.I am going to lengthen it.The cowl drains to the lower tray, via 3 holes which empties into a metal area and when water builds up,it exits out the center drain tube, and one trough out the passenger fender. Why did they bother with the trough? on the driver side,it runs into the metal area which houses the cabin filter and blower motor?he whole design seems strange to me.have you seen this issue before?I would appreciate any help you can offer.where I am we get rain 25 days a month all winter.I have been using a towel for the water, till I figure out exactly how to fix it.I got the car 3 months ago.it has 200000 km on it.I just put in a new fuel pump and the rest of the car is excellent.absolutely everything works. If I can get the leak fixed I will have a first class car.thanks  ed

Answer
It is much more likely to be coming in via the sunroof drains. It was not uncommon for the front sunroof drain hoses to either become disconnected or for the plastic coupler to break. Remove the visor and the side grab handle, lower the corner of the headliner and inspect the corner of the sunroof assembly to see if the hose is disconnected or broken and repair as needed. If you don't see anything obvious I would pour water into the sunroof and see if the drains allow water to flow freely out, they could be plugged and not allow water out which would cause a leak also.
