Saturn Repair: 1995 Saturn heavy fuel/smoke smell, fuel pressure regulator, vacuum leak

Question
Hey there, over the past fill up on my 1995 Saturn sedan, it has reduced it's MPG 35% and just yesterday started smoking out the tail pipe as well as a heavy fuel smell.

When it started doing that yesterday, it also had a huge loss of power.

Couldn't get over 30mph uphill on the highway.

Thanks so much for any help!

Jay

Answer
There are a few things to check. Open the hood with the engine running and see if you hear a hissing sound. If you do you have a big vacuum leak. A vacuum leak tricks the O2 sensors into telling the computer to add more fuel. GM vehicles will keep adding until you get a condition similar to this. Also the fuel pressure regulator could be stuck or the vacuum hose came off. Double check those things and if you cannot find something obvious I would take it to a repair shop and have further diagnostics done on it.
