Saturn Repair: Saturn SL2 starting problem, saturn sl2, starter solonoid

Question
It's 0 degrees out and when I turn the key to start the car it only clicks - won't turn the engine. Tried jumping it and the same thing happens. Eventually it engages and starts right away. I start it now without any jump but it takes a few tries to engage the starter. Is it the solonoid on the starter? If so can it be fixed cuz a new starter/solonoid costs $175.00. 2001 Saturn SL2 4 door sedan.
Thanks,
John

Answer
Hi John,

Yes, it is the starter.. Don't buy a new one...have your rebuilt at an alternator / start shop. It will be about $40 and be as good as the one you buy new for $150+.

THe solonoid is probably not the problem...it is more likely that the lubricant for the starter motor is gummed up and too thick when cold. It could be the solenoid being too gummed up and slowe to react, as well.  ALways replace the unit as a whole...but in this case...have the whole unit rebuilt.  Your phone book should have a listingfor a shop in your area.

Good Luck with everything.
