Saturn Repair: Anti-Freeze, radiator cap, saturn sl2

Question
About a week or 2 ago I notice a little leak under my 1997 Saturn SL2.  It wasn't alot - but I had it towed to a repair shop to have it checked out.  They had 3 mechanics look at the car.  None of them could find a problem.  The hoses are all good, the water pump was good.  They ran a diagnostic test and said that was good.  The mechanic said that the anti-freeze overflow just ran over, that the engine must have gotten a little hot.  None of the lights come on, the car doesn't over heat and is driving fine.  It just continues to leak anti-freeze.  Not everyday, but usually when I run the heater. And it does not leak alot.  All three mechanics stated they thought the anti-freeze was overfilled and once it got down the the proper level the overflow issue would stop.  Any ideas?

Answer
Hi Missy,
I think that the coolant resevoir cap is the problem and needs to be replaced.
Since the SL2's don't have a radiator cap, it is hard to diagnose for a lot of shops.  The coolant cap is the big black cap on the antifreeze tank, located on the passenger side of the engine compartment, be the wheel well. That plastic cap goes bad pretty easily and I think that it no longer maintains the proper pressure which causes the cooalnt to 'boil' and perkulate.  That causes the leak from the overflow.  I replaced mine with an aftermarket cap from AutoZone autoparts store for about $12 two years ago and it has been fine since.

Hope that helps,
