Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Flywheel gap on h 60 sno thro, magnet gap, stator plate

Question
I have a '64 h60 Ariens. I just rebuilt the points
And put in a condenser but forgot to mark the stator.
How do you set the flywheel magnet gap? I saw the specs of
0.90 bdtc & 0125 gap , how do you set them?

Answer
Hi Tom

1st set the breaker point gap ,  turn crankshaft until point rub arm is resting on the high side of ignition cam , set point gap by loosening the screw on the movable point and insert a 0.020 thou feeler gauge  and adjust so that there is a very slight drage and tighten screw and recheck gap - readjust as needed

leave the leads comming from points disconnected at this time ,

you may need to remove cyl head to do via piston movement  - easier to measure with head off

you will need to set the piston at correct position BTDC on compression stroke
that is 0.080 BTDC  or 2.03 mm  BTDC  , you will need to set at TDC 1st  then  set a  depth gauge to the exact depth of plug hole to piston  and that point    and measure it   then add  2.03 mm to that measurement  and then run the piston back down the bore on compression stroke then back up to the measurement you noted ( tdc measurement + 2.03 mm )
leave piston at that point  , connect a continuity buzzer  between point lead and earth and loosen 2 bolts holding stator plate down  and rotate until continuity buzzer indicates no contact to earth , tighten the stator plate screws , connect point and condenser leads

plug gap 0.028 -0.030 thou

my rule of thumb has been  if piston @TDC compression stroke points should be broken 0.003 thou , std  point gap  0.020 thou       - wider gap -later spark,-small dwell -
close gap-earlier spark- large dwell

usually  timing is set with a dial gauge and offset leg  to reach piston

service manual does not say anything about flywheel gap , this should be set  with flywheel and crankshaft if units have internal mounted coils

does your unit have a external ignition  coil  if so  set air gap with  flywheel magnets under the coil legs  to 0.0125 thou and tighten mount screws , be sure  flywheel does not contact

hope this helps  let me know if it does

cheers paul
