Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): best guess of age., 8hp briggs and stratton, starter clutch

Question
I have found an older snapper mower with a white 8 horse briggs.  It does run but during the test run the belt squeaked so we decided that was enough. But the pull chord got hung up and now you can't pull it at all and its hanging about 6inchs out of the motor. Is this a big problem or a simple fix? The price of the mower is 65.00 so I don't think its a bad deal with a little TLC. What's your thoughts on it?

Answer
The squeal your heard was most likely the starter clutch since rope is hanging out.

You will need to remove the starter housing to access the starter clutch.  Remove and replace the starter clutch...it unscrews like a regular nut.

You can You Tube Briggs and Stratton starter clutch or starter repair and find several vidoes showing how to remove the starter clutch and repair the starter cord.

You may have to replace the starter pulley and/or recoil spring if they are broke.

You can try cleaning the starter clutch but I've had them stick.  When you have the starter clutch off make sure to CLEAN the crankshaft post.  I use plumber sandpaper to clean the crank post.

Let me know if this helps.
