Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Troy-bilt 13at609g766, chris answer, pivot point

Question
Question:

I have a Troy-Bilt 13AT609G766 2005 with auto-drive.
The variator assembly failed and the belt was broken.
Variator was replaced as well as the belts.
All adjustments made properly and all is well now.

When I push the pedal to move forward or back, the cruise sticks in the engaged position in the gear below the frame.
It will release when pressing the brake or the motion pedal again.

I'm told this has been a problem since the tractor was new.

I would like to know if an adjustment is possible, or possibly an incorrect cruise rod installed from the factory.

Thanks in advance,
Chris

Answer:

I would check the cruise rod.  While very dangerous, can you remove the deck and watch under the mower as a helper moves the pedals to see if anything is binding or maybe a spring is missing.  We have a chain hoist we use to lift mowers and it works well when we have to do something like this.

I have removed the cruise rod for testing.
After removing the rod, the motion pedal works as expected.
The tractor will start and stop moving when pressed or released.
There is no apparent binding in the lower cruise mechanism

Is the idler pulley/variable pulley pivot point wore and binding?

The idler and variator seem to be working as expected with no binding.

Answer
Will the cruise dis-engage when completing any of the actions below?

Disengage the cruise control using one of the following
methods:
• Depress the brake pedal to disengage the cruise
control and stop the tractor.
• Lightly depress the drive pedal.
To change to the reverse direction when operating with
cruise control, depress the brake pedal to disengage
the cruise control and bring the tractor to a complete
stop. Then place the shift lever in the REVERSE
position and depress the drive pedal.
