Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): brake shaft oil seal, peerless transaxle, craftsman riding mower

Hows the best way to change oil seal on brake shaft on peerless transaxle model 206-545c Craftsman riding mower.I have the old one out,it had a metal ring around it like most oil seals does,but the replacement oil seal is only rubber and want go inside of the housing where the old seal came out.Do you have to take the gear case apart to set the oil seal in then put gear case back together.Appreciate any information you can give me on this

Page 7 covers seals.  The best tip I can give for installing the new seal is to make sure you use some type of a seal protector.  The OE tool is a round plactic tube to prevent cutting the seal when sliding over the shaft.  I have used microfiche film and just wrapped it around the shaft but you may be able to get by with tape or a piece of plactic cut from a 2 liter softdrink bottle.

You can use a large socket or a piece of PVC plastic pipe with the same outside diameter as the seal a seal driver.  We keep various sizes of plactic pipe in the shop for driving in seals.

Once the new seal is in make sure you have the correct type and amount of fluid in the transaxle.
