Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Craftsman mower stalls at full throttle, craftsman mower 917, float bowl

Question
QUESTION: I have a Craftsman mower 917.373981.  It stalls when the throttle is opened all the way.  I've replaced the spark plug and the air filter, and the gas is fresh (1 week old).

Would this be a problem with a weak ignition system or  the carburetor, or something else all together?

Thank you.

ANSWER: I suspect the carburetor is dirty but the parts list did not have the engine model number.

Can you send me the engine model number.  It is located on sticker under the top engine cover.

Do you have an air compressor?

Answer
Just wanted to verify your carb.  The carb you have is very common and they are very simple to clean.  However, make sure you take a couple of pictures before you disconnect the carburetor linkages.  There are several holes where the linkages can connect...just mark the correct holes and take some pictures.

Once the carb is removed you can dis-assemble and clean it by blowing compressed air through all the carb orifices.

There are lots of videos on You Tube showing how to clean Tecumseh or Craftsman carbs.

The link below covers carburetor overhaul procedures:

TIP:  you can try draining the carb bowl by removing the float bowl nut on the bottom of the carb.  Make sure the small in the carb nut is clean...this is the main fuel jet.  Also, if you need to replace your primer bulb make sure you get the right one...some have holes in them and some do not have holes.

Let me know if this helps.
