Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): fuel pumps, electric fuel pump, fuel pressure regulator

Question
eric,
i am building a custom racing mower with a 400 twin motorcycle engine on it and need the gas tank to be behind the seat. this brings up the need for a fuel pump. will a pump off a lawn mower work? do lawn mower pumps work off of a suck and blow air flow? the air coming out of the nipple on the motorcycles crank case is constantly blowing. if a mower pump wont work and you have any other suggestions they would be greatly appreciated.
thank you
cody

Answer
I'm not sure a mower fuel pump would flow enough fuel.  Below is a good link describing Briggs fuel pump operation and servicing the fuel pump.

The mower fuel pump would also limit your fuel delivery options.

Some options you might use include a Walbro or similar inline fuel pump and a fuel pressure regulator.  Walbro pumps can be expensive.

Another option is to look for a used motorcyle electric fuel pump.  Most motorcycles started going to fuel injection in the late 90s, 98 and up many bike had the fuel pump in the fuel tank and the fuel pump had higher pressure for the fuel injection.

You can search Ebay for a 94-97 Honda VFR fuel pump or a 92-97 Honda VT600C Shadow.  I know these two machines use inline electic fuel pumps and are standard carburetor engines.  If the Honda parts are too high, which they usually are, I checked Ebay, look for Yamaha or Suzuki.

How bout the fuel pump in the link below:

$20.00 is cheap to see if it will work.
