Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Commercial Mower Engine, kawasaki fb460v, walk behind lawn mower

Question
i just bought a eaglestar 48" walk behind lawn mower. it has a Kawasaki FB460v-MS14 engine on it. the lawn mower is in good condition. the engine on the other hand, you have to pour gas into the carb to start it. when it does start, it sounds like a race car as loud as it is. the muffler is in good condition. was wondering what could be the cause of having to pour gas into the carb to start it? also are these old mower engines just this loud? any help would be appreciated. thanks

Answer
The entire fuel system needs to be flushed and cleaned, Drain the tank, and flush it out. Also, make sure the lines are in good condition and have no blockages. If it has a fuel filter, replace it. It would be a good idea to add one on to it if it doesn't. Disassemble the carb, and give if a thorough cleaning. Replace the gaskets as necessary. May be a good idea to replace the needle and seat as well. Make sure the engine oil is fresh and full too. As for the noise, the muffler may be loose, or just plain shot, as these motors are not usually too loud.

Good luck!
