Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): 82? toro 724 38050 drive train, friction wheel, greg fischer

Question
Hi John.  i recently inherited my father in laws 1982 toro 724 38050 snowthrower.  i was able to get it running over the weekend.  i engaged the drive and it worked beautifully. all gears 3 forward and 2 reverse were fine.  then, it just stopped working.  i checked the belts, fine.  i took the bottom plate of and saw the rubber wheel making contact with the drive wheel when in gear.  the issue is, the wheels spin freely even though the rubber disk is engaged against the drive wheel.  i see the hexagonal shaft and what appears to be a clutch on the end.  is there a simple adjustment i need to make in order to get the wheels to become engaged??  thank you,

Answer
Hello Greg:

>>Sorry for the Delay. Snow and Ice have Hit Us hard and I have been Very Busy.
>>You can View a Breakdown/IPL of the Mower at this Site Addy, https://lookup3.toro.com/partdex/default.cfm and Select Start Parts Viewer. Now Enter the Model Numbers (38050) and Click Search. Now Select View Assembly Drawings for your Year Model.
>>Select the "Traction Assy" Picture.
>>In the Breakdown Locate the "Tension Spring" (#11) and make sure it is Still Attached.
>>What is the Condition of the Rubber Wheel/Friction Wheel (#65)?
>>Each of the Control Rods should have an Adjustment at at Least 1 End for Adjustments.
>>Have Someone Operate the "Traction Engagement and Watch the Components.
>>It is Possible that a Friction Wheel Bearing (#10) is Bad and Allowing the Traction Wheel to Slip.
>>If you Hit a Snag or this Does Not Correct the Problem,  I Hope to be Here if You Require More Assistance. Hope this Helps. Let me Know What Happens, Please. May the All Mighty Bless You and Yours. Be Safe and Happy. Thanks.

Good Luck
